Brief summary – Anke Labrie

Anke Labrie was born in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel on the 30th of March 1948, at the time a rural village.
Here she grew up and here her love for nature awoke. The classics formed the basis of her cultural interest.

Anke Labrie

She developed a profound interest for: philosophy, poetry and visual art.

In 1985 she graduated from the “Gerrit Rietveld Academie” in Amsterdam, where she lives nowadays.
In her paintings, the memories of her childhood and the views on life, she has now, are intertwined, thus creating a new reality.

Although, she used to do a lot of painting after nature, of which she still underlines the importance, she later deliberately chose for a more abstract approach.
She does not make use of preliminary studies and/or photographs, because she thinks it will hinder the magic of the process of painting.
The inner image is her sole guideline.

The past few years she has been writing poetry again. She regularly takes part in literary gatherings, where people read from their own work.
A selection from her poems, combined with pictures of her paintings has been published by “Galerie De Roos van Tudor” in Leeuwarden, with the title: “Aan de oevers van de droom” (On the boards of the dream).

SOME QUOTES FROM THE REVIEWS

“What strikes you most in her paintings, are the strong, warm colours with a fresco-like gleam by using transparant layers.
Add to this the fascinating interaction of interlocking shapes, compositions which give the impression of being part of a larger whole, and you have paintings which continue to fascinate, because they very strongly invite you to create your own story”.
(Leeuwarder Courant)

“The stillness in her paintings is very beautiful, she seems to take a distance from her emotions, in order to paint the figures as plain as possible”.
(Utrechts Nieuwsblad)

“The paintings of Anke Labrie (1948) have something primal, something very natural”.
(Brabants Nieuwsblad)

“Her style of painting is monumental in both shape and colour.
The coat of paint however varies and is solid. The atmosphere her work evokes, is that of a mythical world, not bounded by space and time”.
